Economic Buzz: US Reports Modest Increase In First-Time Claims For Unemployment Benefits

US initial jobless claims rose to 214,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 207,000, a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday showed. The Labor Department said the less volatile four-week moving average also crept up to 209,500, an increase of 2,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 207,000. Continuing claims, a reading on the number of people receiving ongoing unemployment assistance, also inched up by 4,000 to 1.660 million in the week ended September 29th.
